Nobel Prize for Chemistry

The nobel prize In Chemistry has been awarded for using the concept of evolution to develop proteins and solve chemical problems.

Frances H. Arnold, California Institute of technology, US (50% award share =$ 1 million)

George P. Smith, University of Missouri, U.S ( 25% share)

Sir Gregory P. Winter, MRC Lab of Molecular Biology, U.K.( 25% award share)

Fish can swim in polar oceans as they have developed anti freeze proteins. Arnold used this concept to build better enzymes. Enzymes are catalysts which speed up chemical processes.

Smith and winter applied this technique to create better antibodies.

Antibodies are proteins that function like targeted missiles; then can precisely identify to bind to the viruses or bacteria that infect us.

Point to be noted:

Ms Arnold, is the fifth women to win a Chemistry Nobel prize.

Worlds top selling prescription medicine- the antibody injection Humira for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.
