Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated Silver Jubilee Celebration of NHRC

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) 25th anniversary and said that it has an important role to play in government’s efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.
  • Mr Modi cited Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, ‘Swachta Bharat, Saubhagya Yojana as schemes aimed towards providing dignified life for all. Modi said government is moving ahead with the aim of employment for all, education for all and health care for all.
  • On the occasion, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, NHRC has a very important place in country’s institutional framework. He said, women rights are equally important and government is working towards providing safe environment to women.
  • The NHRC was set up on the 12th October, 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, passed by Parliament.

    Tushar Mehta appointed new Solicitor General of India

  • Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta appointed the new Solicitor General of India,the second highest ranking law officer, almost a year after the post fell vacant, according to an official order.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020, or until further orders.
  • Mehta who hails from Gujarat has been serving as Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014 when the BJP came to power at the Centre. He has appeared for Centre in many significant cases including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act.

Manu Bhaker win Gold in Youth Olympics

  • Manu Bhaker became the first shooter from India to claim a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games.Manu Bhaker is an Indian sport Indian shooter. She represented India at the 2018 ISSF World Cup and won two Gold Medals. She is the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup. She won the gold medal in women’s 10 m air pistol event at Commonwealth Games 2018 just at the age of 16 in her maiden Commonwealth Games appearance.
  • This is India’s third medal from at the Games after ShahuMane and Mehuli Ghosh clinched silver medals in men’s and women’s 10m air rifle events, respectively.
